Artist Joan Tucker Works Featured on Brothers & Sisters

22 Abstract Paintings by Joan Tucker Appeared in Lucs Gallery

Los Angeles, CA— Artist Joan Tucker took over Luc’s sold out gallery event on last night’s episode of Brothers & Sisters.  The episode featured 22 of Joans exceptionally detailed abstract paintings, one of which will take up permanent residence in Kitty’s apartment in future episodes.

“I’m pleased that Brothers & Sisters recognized my work by featuring so many of my paintings in this one episode and for purchasing one of those paintings for appearances in upcoming episodes,” says costume designer turned artist Joan Tucker. “Licensing and selling my paintings and mixed media collage to film and television properties in addition to traditional gallery exhibitions exposes my work to a larger art-buying audience.”

Since applying her creativity to the art of mixed media collage and abstract painting, Joan’s work, which is widely collected both nationally and internationally, has also appeared in a variety of places including film and TV sets such as Little Fockers and Brothers & Sisters, to several corporate collections including Wells Fargo, the private collection of a LACMA Board Member, to the Michael Jackson suite at the Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City to the Tower Suites at Mandalay Bay.

Joan approaches each new work of art with an invigorated spirit and draws on her everyday surroundings and adventures to source materials and ponder her next creative direction. Walking into Joan‘s West Adams studio amidst finished works you’ll find shredded billboards, old paintings and newspaper she’s picked up from her travels, torn photographs, and an array of remnants from in and around Los Angeles, which Joan seamlessly constructs into beautifully composed collages and paintings.

“I begin to dig and shape... to push and pull...to sometimes tearing the painting apart and reassembling it with other elements. I scribble imaginary shapes. I create a private alphabet. I apply paint and scratch it away with my fingernails or an old brush or alcohol. The whole process is very exciting - full of energy and emotion and yet the principals of design are there, fighting to be considered,” Joan says of her process. ”In the end I have a painting that was begun in an emotional and intuitive state, tamed and controlled by the basic elements of organization and composition that invokes a secret world...a provocative world...a rich and sensual world to get lost and found in.”

ABOUT JOAN TUCKER

Joan Tucker was born in Detroit Michigan and first began styling in Chicago, for print and TV, where she met and worked with Nicholas Ray while he was shooting his film on the Chicago 7 Trial in1969.

Joan moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970's where she continued her career in wardrobe design working on several Gene Corman produced "blaxploitation"  movies and styling commercials for the likes of  Andrew Davis, Joe Pytka, Barry Sonnenfeld, Steve Horn, Norman Griner, Henry Sandbank, David Cornell, Kinka Usher, Caleb Deschanel, David Steinberg and others including photographer Reid Miles.

In LA, Joan developed a long and successful career in costume design for film, and TV. Just as Joan pieced together fabrics of every texture and color to create costumes for award-winning advertisements, her paintings reflect great variety in form, palette and message from series to series, while definitively incorporating her curiosity, whimsy, liveliness and unabashed emotion.

" I love color, texture, archeology, buried secrets, surprise discoveries, layers and emotion,” says Joan of the inspiration for her works. Joan's sophisticated use of layering with paint and collage allows her to create a world where what is hidden is slowly revealed as the viewer spends time exploring the canvases.

Though Joan continues styling for commercials and works on various interior design projects, she can be most often found in her studio "fighting it out with her paintings" and creating remarkable works of art. Letterform Artist and Font Designer Michael Doret To Speak at The Art Institute Hollywood on Friday March 4, 2011

Hollywood, CA— The Art Institute Hollywood is thrilled to host Award-winning Letterform Artist and Font Designer Michael Doret for a special Design Discussion entitled “It Began In Brooklyn: From A to Z and Beyond” on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 6pm.

The power and dynamism Michael Doret brings to the art of letterforms has lead Doret to become one of the most celebrated practitioners of “integrated letterforms” to date. In addition to his contributions to the Los Angeles cityscape, you’ve likely seen the Doret-designed NY Knicks and Major League Baseball World Series logos, KISS album covers or any number of the many TIME magazine covers Michael Doret has created.

Doret’s award–winning, high profile work blurs the distinctions between the worlds of lettering, illustration, and graphic design. Most recently, Doret’s font design, “Deliscript,” which can be seen around town on the Canter’s Food Truck, was included in the TDC² 2010 Typeface Design competition, and was selected by jury to appear in Typography Annual 1-- the January/February 2011 issue of Communication Arts.

In this special design discussion, Michael Doret will delve into his past and share with the audience the primal sources for the sensibilities that drive his art and his recent transition into font design.  Michael will discuss how his environment and surroundings while growing up in Brooklyn, New York, made deep and lasting impressions in his young mind and are still prevalent in his work today. The event is open to the public. Space is limited.

Artist Michael Doret Posts 3-Part Blog Series On The Making of KISS SONIC BOOM Cover Art

Michael Doret Created Album Art for

KISS's Platinum Selling Rock And RollOver

And Newly Released CD/DVD Package SONIC BOOM

Los Angeles, CA --August 18, 2009
—Michael Doret, award-winning illustrator, designer and lettering artist, has taken to his AlphabetSoup blog to discuss the making of the cover art for CD/DVD package SONIC BOOM, the first new material in 11 years from revered rock band KISS. Michael was the artist behind iconic cover and platinum selling album Rock And Roll Over and was thrilled to take up the chance to help bring SONIC BOOM to life.

It happened in April 2009, out of the blue, KISS's Paul Stanley, from somewhere in South America, phones Michael about a new project. From there, the process for creating what is now known as SONIC BOOM began. Michael is detailing the adventure, from the beginning, by reflecting on his initial experience with Rock And Roll Over through to the debut of SONIC BOOM. He is including imagery of both projects as well as the initial sketch he created for his vision of SONIC BOOM to present to KISS. Says Michael, "While Paul Stanley didn’t want me to reprise what I had done with my art for the Rock And Roll Over cover, he did want me to try to capture some of the same spirit, attitude, energy, and look that I had instilled in that piece. I am very happy with the result and look forward to the KISS fans' response." KISS earlier today announced the release SONIC BOOM exclusively through Walmart and Sam's Club retail locations onOctober 6, 2009.

An Open Letter to the US Postal Service

Dear USPS:

Can you please get your act together. A vendor shipped me a gift for my niece on August 21. To date it has crisscrossed the country no less than 5 times. Why it even made it out of Massachusetts is beyond me really-- both the vendor and my niece live in the Bay state. I live in Los Angeles, maybe you knew this? Are you occasionally intuitive? No, can't be because NOBODY involved lives in Nashua, NH (though I've visited several times and well it's a nice little town). I called to tell you that I could help you, but you hung up on me. :-(

I tried again, only to hear that you do not have access to information about my package and it's only provided to me as a courtesy, yet I did nothing to identify myself as the recipient other than entering the tracking number into the search field on your site. Go ahead, you try it, it's super easy. You too can pull the same info as me. I tried to explain this to you and even encouraged you to jump on the information super highway yourself to give it a whirl but you again hung up on me. Do you have an iphone 3g? Is that why our calls keep getting disconnected?

Long story short USPS, I would just like my niece to get her present before she goes to college. It's fair warning, she's only 1 now. I'm even willing to have you ship it back to the vendor (the vendor and i discussed this at length and she's TOTALLY cool about it). Heck, send it to me. I could probably hand deliver it faster. Or even, FEDEX it for guaranteed delivery. I mean, geez, with the cost of fuel and the airlines charging baggage (that's right airlines, stick it to us, we can fit everything into those damn terror-proof ziplock bags now anyway), I'm concerned you may be blowing your budget with all this volleying the country with my niece's present. In short USPS, I really just want to see the bright glowing 4 toothed smile of my 1 year old niece

For your convenience, I've pasted the details of this package's journey below.

Thanks and best,
Paula Gould
Consumer, Publicist, Aunty.

Ps. I think it goes without saying the shipping costs are on you. We could pretend it was the lottery and you could hand me a huge check for $5.95. But I may just be content on getting the damn package.

Tickets for WINTER on sale Friday July 11, 2008 8am PST

U.S. P REMIERE OF CONTEMPORARY NORWEGIAN PLAYWRIGHT JON FOSSE’S WINTER” OPENING THURSDAY, JULY 31, 2008 AT THE CULVER STUDIOS’ STAGE 7, CULVER CITY

WINTER, a Play by Jon Fosse, Directed By John Swanbeck, Starring Lene Pedersen and Terje Skonseng Naudeer

HOLLYWOOD, CA, --Internationally acclaimed Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse’s WINTER will have its U.S. Premiere at The Culver Studios’ Stage 7 in Culver City, California on Thursday, July 31st, 2008, at 8:00PM. WINTER, translated for an English audience by Ann Henning Jocelyn and Lene Pedersen, is directed by film and stage Director John Swanbeck, whose debut film, THE BIG KAHUNA, starred Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito, and whose Los Angeles stage debut, THE FORCE OF CHANGE, was universally and critically acclaimed. The cast of WINTER includes Norwegian actors Lene Pedersen (A DOLL’S HOUSE; L.A. RICOCHET) and Terje Skonseng Naudeer (MACBETH; TWO THOUSAND ACRES OF SKY). Lene Pedersen is also the play’s Producer.

WINTER tells the story of the emotional affair between two strangers who meet one cold winter evening. A woman of questionable background encounters a lonely businessman on a business trip. The two become entangled in an, at times comic, often brutal relationship. Risking their lives and livelihood, the pair is drawn together by a longing, which they cannot control. As they become entangled in each other’s lives, they find themselves trapped by their own desires. One consequentially intimate night in a hotel room changes the two, forever.

Says Director John Swanbeck, “The play is deceptively complex and enigmatic. The relationship between the two characters is not an easy one to grasp. Much like life, it cannot be easily defined or categorized. In Lene Pedersen I knew I had an actress with the subtlety, grace, emotional complexity and sense of humor necessary to bring the female character to life.”

“We are honored to stage WINTER at The Culver Studio’s Stage 7, for all its mystery and rich history. There’s no better place to perform our love story, WINTER, than returning to the stages graced by Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh while filming GONE WITH THE WIND,” says WINTER’s Producer and Lead Actress Lene Pedersen.

This modern play explodes with innovative elements unique for productions at this level, harnessing the talent of Show Designer Ray Woodbury (Backstreet Boys, Gwen Stefani, Kelly Clarkson), Lighting Programmer Andy Figueroa (The Crystal Method, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young), and featuring music composed by multi-instrumentalist and composer Gabrial McNair (Oslo, Green Day, No Doubt).

WINTER opens to the Public beginning Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 8:00PM and will run Thursdays - Saturdays at 8:00PM and Sundays at 2:00PM. The play runs through August 17th, 2008. Stage 7 at The Culver Studios is located at 9336 W. Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232. Parking is free. Tickets go on sale Friday July 11, 2008. Tickets are $25, and can be purchased online at www.wintertheplay.com. Last minute tickets may also be available at The Culver Studios. Inquire online at www.wintertheplay.com.

Independence Day Los Angeles to Boston.

As the intense heat of the Los Angeles summer day yielded to the cooling desert night, an orb of prismatic light encircled the sun in front of me far beyond the fingertips of my outstretched arms. This serene bubble melted into a magenta sky before giving way to an effervescent night of pyrotechnics and good cheer. The skies beyond the freeway showcased eruptions of color from every pier and inland park. The boom of explosions lingered in the air until the next bursts of light and just as quickly fizzled to darkness like the sparklers in the hands of the children below.

Thousands of miles away familiar festivities of impromptu Frisbee games, grape fights, laughter, barbeques and Yankee Doodle sing-a-longs filled Boston's shoreline, suppressed only by the oohs and aahs, like orchestrated inhales and exhales, from the boats resting on the Charles and crowds along its banks as the fireworks of the Esplanade punctuated the 1812 and The Pops conceded to the most magnificent tantrum of sound and light displayed over the Harbor. An outburst of applause and nasal pitch boat horns screaming in unison marked the beginning of the battle of the Locks and the end of the Independence Day celebrations.
